Aspiring news producer Becky Fuller (McAdams) just got laid off of her job. In an effort to get a new job, she sends many different resumes out. She gets a call from a morning show called DayBreak. DayBreak is a struggling show because it's competing with the Today Show. She gets the executive producer job and fires the conceited co host Paul McVee (Ty Burrell). The other workers at DayBreak applaud her. She finds a new co host for Colleen Peck (Keaton) in Mike Pomeroy (Ford), a popular television reporter for IBS, DayBreak's channel. He only accepts because Becky finds a clause in Mike's contract. Becky begins to date Adam (Patrick Wilson) an IBS worker. As ratings begin to go down, Becky is told that if ratings don't improve, DayBreak will be cancelled. Becky improves ratings by getting Ernie (Matt Malloy), to do the weather while riding the new Six Flags coaster, the Manhandler. However, because she is addicted to her job, Adam doesn't see how he and Becky can date. Pomeroy approaches Becky and tells her that he once was addicted to his job, but he ended up with nothing. During a meeting, Pomeroy shows interest in doing a story, to the surprise of the other workers. Becky goes with her, but she realizes that he is going to the governor's summer house instead of the original story. He ends up arresting the governor and being the first to break the story. This gets DayBreak a lot more viewers. Due to DayBreak's rise, she gets an interview from the Today Show. During the interview, DayBreak is on and Mike knows that he needs Becky. So, he leaves the set and goes to the kitchen where they do food segments. Becky watches in awe as Pomeroy tells the viewers how to make a good frittata because at the beginning he tells her he doesn't want to cook. Becky runs back to the set and notices that she is the producer everyone at DayBreak wanted all along.
